Putting Computer Systems to Work (MT262)

This course is great, you even get to program a game for one of the TMAs.

I loved this course, as do an awful lot of students who enjoy the frustrating lows and the soaring highs you get when programming.

On this course you get to move onto window programs, that gave me a real kick, it made me feel like I was a real programmer.

To give you an idea of what you learn I've included some of the programs that I created when studying this course.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firstly we created some DOS based programs, beware these programs are case sensitive so B is not the same as b.

This little program is for use by a market researcher asking people who they are going to vote for in an upcoming election. The program asks you questions about who someone will be voting for and then gives you totals at the end.

Next up was a program to test if a word was a palindrome (reads the same backwards and forwards but remember Kayak is not a palindrome because K is not the same as k).

Followed by a program to test if a number is a cube.

The final DOS program will convert pounds sterling into various other currencies. This program will accept the countries of Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Turkey. Obviously don't place any reliance on the conversion rates ;o))

Now comes the fun windows programs. Firstly a control panel for a car barrier. You can open the barrier by entering the code 1234, or you can click the operator button and get up a panel to bypass the input pad.

Finally in the last TMA you get to enhance a basic game provided by the course team. Some of the other students really go to town on this and create some great graphics with sound but I kept mine fairly simple. The instructions are not that clear, you actually need to hit all 6 targets not just the 4 that are in the corners. So anyway have fun ;o)
